Am I the coach for you? Print E-mail

I am interested in working with any athlete who feels they could benefit from a structured and logical approach to training and performance. My grounding in Endurance Physiology means I can offer a sound scientific programme and introduce the latest in scientific research and technologies including periodising the training year to take into consideration season goals and key events; using powermeters in training; optimising nutrition; guidance on ergogenic aids and refining race strategies. But do prepared to be experimental and open to new ideas – I understand that no two people are the same, and will respond differently to the training loads and volumes prescribed. However, armed with my subject knowledge, I will be able to detect what does and doesn’t work for you and adjust your training accordingly.

Being a female, I am in a position to understand the importance of offering women a comprehensive plan of training appropriate to their unique physiology. I know that men and women ARE different – we communicate in a different way, need more emotional support, and respond different to nutritional and training strategies. Also, I understand the issues that are too often associated with elite performance in sport – for example, getting that balance between eating to train and pressures to be lean. I have been through this myself, and can share my own experiences with you as well as with skills learnt from my professional training.

There are an amazing amount of people who train hard, fill their year with races, spend all their money on new equipment yet don’t enjoy what they do – yes, its true! Its not that they don’t love the sport, or the activities associated with it. Its more about the pressure they put on themselves to be ‘perfect’, to get results, to beat others. I know, I have been there. There were weekends I would dread because of a race – expectation to achieve a certain result, not from others, but from myself. I would say ‘well, this time tomorrow, the race will be over and I can relax again’. Imagine that? 25 hours each week, dedicated to something to I wasn’t enjoying, out of choice! I won’t rely on sports psychology techniques to ‘paper over the cracks’. That isn’t a dig at psychology, because I do believe in those techniques have a time and a place -  like addressing stress and pre-race anxiety. Additional reflection though can helps us look at the cause, not the symptom. It has worked for me, and I now see my own performance as being all about me and for me, not about the recognition achieving a race result.

Really, I am happy to work with anybody who wishes to use sport as an expression of who they are – this isn’t exclusive to elite performance, but to anyone who wants to use movement towards a goal or dream in sport. We learn a lot by taking ourselves out of our comfort zones, risking ‘failure’ – whether that be achieving our first marathon, Ironman, or learning how to go faster on a bike. I will work with you on your chosen journey, and help you align the challenges of work, life and sport. If you are interested in working with me, check out my ‘services’ page for packages, prices and perhaps ideas of what may suit you.
