Due to Helen’s coaching, my cycling fitness and technical skills have improved measurably. The opportunity to undergo a series of tests in the laboratory under Helen’s expert supervision meant that she could write a goal focused training plan based on the results, all I had to do was train accordingly! For me, though, Helen’s ability to motivate and build confidence, and her “can do” attitude and open-minded approach to suggestions and new ideas are what make her a great coach. Just a shame she doesn’t drink proper coffee!
Jo Edson, a3crg ladies team It is great having the opportunity to work with Helen. I have admired Helen for some years as a TTer. In a male dominated sport it is lovely to have the expertise of somebody as talented as Helen with her knowledge of cycling as well as her scientific background. Being that she is a talented TT and track rider herself I am hoping that some of that talent will rub off on me!! She is very supportive and a lovely person to have as my coach.
Louise Burman, a3crg ladies team For me one of the most important elements of being coached is to have someone who listens and works with me to help define realistic annual goals and how to achieve them. Helen and I have stuck up a good understanding and Helen has developed easy to understand and execute training plans for me. I’m excited about the scientific analysis of data (including power, both SRM and Power Tap) which will help to develop and execute more effective training sessions and define better feeding strategies. Helen has proven to be a good listener, providing excellent support through a period of injury.
Simon Turner, Masters Mountain biker After 12 years of racing, it felt like I’d tried all the sporting avenues to improve my performance. I had tried some coaching, but felt like the advice came from the same books I’d read. I discussed what I was looking for from a coach with Helen, from that point forward a whole new side to my racing and training has opened up. Working with Helen feels like a partnership with the objective to make me a better athlete. Helen’s ever positive outlook and real drive to want to coach are backed up by doing the research and not just reading about it. Am I a better athlete? The numbers prove it! More than that, I’m motivated by working with Helen and what that means for my future riding.
Chris Stocks, Science In Sport When I returned to competitive cycling after a ten year break, I wanted to make the most of my ability by training scientifically. I chose Helen to enable me to do this because she combines academic knowledge with experience as a top-level racing cyclist. Helen gave me a full physical assessment and presented the results in a detailed report that idenitfied my strengths and weaknesses. She then provided personalised training guidance so that I can improve and achieve my targets. Helen is really knowledgeable, enthusiastic and supportive, and I would thoroughly recommend her sports testing and coaching services to any cyclist who wants to become a better rider.
Tony Miller, De Laune CC I am a hard working time triallist who, currently, works far harder than results on the road demonstrate. In order to change this I went to seek advice from a fellow cyclist who understands exactly what it’s all about. That was important to me – to know exactly what I do in training and what it is all about on the road as Helen does it herself. It is so helpful and reassuring to have small talk, even on the way in to the lab, based on what you have been doing and getting a response that is sympathetic, but also really understands, not one that doesn’t really know and just joins in for the sake of it. Nobody really understands your sport unless they actually do it themselves. During the testing, Helen gave “proper” words of encouragement to keep me going. I did not feel that they were condescending in any way. Jill Barlett, Hounslow and District Wheelers
